Google Business Profile setup for a house cleaning company
Categories, service area radius, the services list, photos of empty clean rooms, posts, Q and A, and the hours mistake most cleaning companies make.
Your Google Business Profile is the storefront for a business that has no storefront. For a house cleaning company it is usually doing more work than the website, because a homeowner searching "house cleaning near me" on a phone at 8 p.m. sees three listings and taps one without ever leaving Maps. This guide is the full setup, in the order that matters, with the specific choices that apply to residential cleaning rather than generic local SEO advice.
For context on where the bar sits: 62.7% of cleaning companies list no hours at all, and 91.7% have at least one photo. The gaps are large and cheap to close.
Service area, not address
Almost every cleaning company should be a service-area business. You go to the customer. If you list your home address, Google shows it publicly and you get strangers at your door, plus a listing that ranks around a residential street instead of the metro.
In the profile, remove the address and add service areas. Google allows up to 20. Do not add 20. Add the six to ten cities or neighborhoods where you actually take work and where your crews can drive without killing a day. A service area list that covers half the state tells Google nothing and dilutes your relevance for the towns you care about.
One nuance worth knowing: Google still ranks service-area businesses by their hidden pin location. If your pin is 40 minutes from your best market, you will struggle there. That is not something to fake, but it should inform where you push for reviews mentioning specific towns.
Categories
Primary category: House cleaning service. That is the correct one for residential recurring work, and it is the category the overwhelming majority of the 45,428 listings in our dataset carry.
Secondary categories, pick only what you truly do:
- Cleaning service, if you also take small commercial jobs
- Janitorial service, only if you have actual office contracts
- Carpet cleaning service, only if you own the machine
- Window cleaning service, same test
Adding categories you do not serve pulls in leads you cannot close and confuses Google about what you are. A house cleaning company that adds "Carpet cleaning service" to catch spillover usually ends up ranking worse for both.
The services list is free keyword real estate
Under Services, add every item as its own entry with a real description. Most cleaning companies leave this blank. Build out at least these:
- Recurring house cleaning (weekly, biweekly, monthly)
- Deep cleaning
- Move-out cleaning
- Move-in cleaning
- Post-construction cleaning
- Apartment and condo cleaning
- Airbnb turnover cleaning
- One-time cleaning
Write two or three sentences under each. For move-out cleaning, say what is included, roughly what it costs, and how long it takes: "Move-out cleaning for a 3-bedroom home in Cary and Apex, typically 4 to 6 hours, starting at $320. Includes inside oven, inside fridge, baseboards, blinds, cabinet interiors and window sills." That text gets indexed, and AI answer engines quote it almost verbatim.
Photos, and what to shoot
Shoot after, in an empty room, with the blinds open and the lights on. Nobody wants to see your before photos of someone else's mess, and posting a stranger's dirty kitchen is a trust problem even when you have permission.
The set that works, ten to fifteen images:
- Three finished kitchens from different homes
- Three finished bathrooms, close on the fixtures and the folded towel
- Two living rooms with vacuum lines visible on carpet
- Two of your crew in branded shirts on a porch or beside the van
- One of the van with the logo and phone number
- One of your supply caddy or the products you use, if they are a selling point
Add two or three new photos every month. Geotagging is not a real ranking factor, but freshness correlates with engagement, and engagement is.
Hours, and the weekend mistake
Only 23.2% of house cleaning companies show Saturday hours and 12.9% show Sunday. Move-out cleans, pre-party cleans and Airbnb turnovers are disproportionately weekend work, and the homeowner searching Saturday at 9 a.m. is looking at a column of listings that say "Closed."
If your office answers calls Saturday morning, list Saturday hours even if crews are not cleaning. If nobody answers, list the real hours and put missed-call text-back behind the number so the Saturday caller gets a reply in seconds instead of Monday. That is covered in the missed calls guide.
Do not list yourself as open 24 hours unless someone genuinely answers. Only 5.4% of companies do, and a caller who reaches voicemail at 11 p.m. on a listing that said 24 hours leaves a bad review about it.
Posts and the Q and A section
Google Posts expire after seven days for most types, so post weekly or not at all. What works for cleaning: a specific offer with a date ("$50 off a first deep clean booked before October 15"), a job type spotlight, or a hiring post. Hiring posts do double duty in this industry, since staffing is the constraint on growth for most companies.
The Q and A section is public and anyone can answer, including competitors and cranks. Seed it yourself. Post six questions from your own second account and answer them from the business:
- Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?
- Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
- Are you insured and bonded?
- What is the difference between a deep clean and a standard clean?
- Do you clean inside the oven and fridge?
- What areas do you serve?
Answer in full sentences with prices where you can. This block is one of the most quoted sources when AI assistants summarize a local business.
The attributes and the booking link
Fill in the attributes: identifies as women-owned or veteran-owned if true, appointment required, online estimates. These show as chips on the listing and they get read.
Add a booking link if you take online booking. Point it at your own booking page, not a third-party marketplace, so you own the customer. If you do not have online booking, point the link at a quote page on your website. The website guide covers what that page needs.
Frequently asked
Should I list a home address to get a pin? No. Google's guidelines require you to hide the address if you do not receive customers there, and violating that risks suspension. Take the service-area setup.
How long until changes affect ranking? Category and service edits usually settle within a few days. Ranking movement from reviews and engagement takes weeks. Nothing here is instant.
Can I have two profiles for two cities? Only if you have a second real staffed location. Duplicate listings for the same business get merged or suspended, and suspension takes weeks to appeal.
